Monthly Donations: JSLint and the “Hobby Horse” Association
This is the last round of our monthly donations this year. As always, we’re supporting an open source project and a non-profit charity organization, and this time they have been selected by yet another newcomer to our Lodz team, Krzysztof Lipiec.
Krzysztof chose a project that already received our donation back in February last year, but we’re happily supporting it again, as it’s something that many of us continue to use on a daily basis – and that is JSLint, the code quality tool for JavaScript. Once again, big thanks to the creator of JSLint, Douglas Crockford.
The recipient of the second donation this month is the “Hobby Horse” Association, based in Lodz. The Association was founded in 2011 with the mission to support the children of the Little Children’s Home in Lodz. We send our best wishes to all the people of the Association, and of course to all the children under their care.
Monthly Donations: OpenWrt and the “Tacy Sami” Association
It’s already past mid-November, which means it’s high time for the next round of donations to open source projects and charity organizations. This month the team member responsible for selecting the recipients is Tomek Antosik, who joined us two months ago.
Per Tomek’s choice, we’re making a donation to OpenWrt, a Linux distribution for embedded devices, mostly network appliances. The original goal of the project was to develop an open source operating system for the popular Linksys WRT54G routers, and this was accomplished in 2004, when the first release of OpenWrt saw daylight. As the project progressed and gained popularity, support for more and more devices was added, and today there are hundreds of appliances that OpenWrt can run on.
The second recipient of this month’s donations is the “Tacy Sami” Association (the name can be roughly translated as “We’re All the Same”), founded in 1999 and based in Wieluń, Tomek’s home town. The Association provides help and care for people with disabilities and works towards their social integration.
Monthly Donations: phpMyAdmin and the Animal Shelter “Na Paluchu”
The time has come for the next, October, edition of our initiative aimed at supporting open source projects and charity organizations. This month Marcin Tabaka, who has been cooperating with us for years, took care of selecting recipients.
Marcin selected a project that assists not only us in our work, but also helps some of our clients, namely the phpMyAdmin tool, which allows MySQL databases to be managed through a web browser. In many cases, this is the simplest manner of getting quick access to data stored on a server. It does not involve the need to use any other software, just a web browser.
PhpMyAdmin has a long history – in September, 16 years had passed since its first edition. We congratulate and thank the developers of the project.
We would also like to make a donation for the benefit of the “Na Paluchu” Homeless Animals’ Shelter – the oldest animal shelter in Warsaw, which has been functioning since 1953. We would like to thank the shelter’s employees and volunteers for their efforts aimed at helping animals.
Monthly Donations: Jenkins and the “Medor” Foundation
August is now 54% done, the days are getting shorter, and schoolchildren have to begin facing the dreadful thought that the summer vacation will soon be over. What definitely is not over is our monthly donations initiative! The recipients of this month’s donations have been picked by the one and only Karol Pasternak.
The open source project that we’re supporting this month is Jenkins, the widely popular continuous integration tool. We have been using it in a few projects for quite some time now, and truly appreciate how it made our work easier.
The second donation that we’re making this month goes to the “Medor” Foundation from the small city of Zgierz. We already supported the Foundation back in June 2012 (shortly after we initiated the monthly donations), by virtually adopting a dog by the name of “Wafel” (which is Polish for “waffle”). A few months later it turned out he found a new home, which was great news to us! Wafel, we hope you’re a happy dog.
All the best to the Foundation’s team!
Monthly Donations: The Mozilla Foundation and the “Cat’s Mum” Foundation
A fresh edition of monthly donations is here! The organizations that we support this month have been carefully selected by Krzysztof Skarbek.
First, we’re making a long-deserved donation to the Mozilla Foundation, who supports the development of two applications that many members of our team use everyday – Firefox and Thunderbird. In addition to that, in our work we often make use of the excellent web development resources collected in the Mozilla Developer Network, which is also ran by the Foundation. Thus, the projects ran by the Mozilla Foundation play a significant role in what we do every day, so we’re grateful to all the people who make that happen – thank you guys, keep up the great work!
We are also supporting the “Cat’s Mum” Foundation, based in Łódź, dedicated to rescuing stray cats and kittens. It was established in 2008 and over the years of activity has saved countless cat lives. The people of the Foundation are truly committed to their mission, and we’re happy to be able to help them a tiny bit. All the best, “Cat’s Mums”!
Monthly Donations: The jQuery Foundation and the Warsaw Hospice for Children Foundation
Summer is almost here, many people are already dreaming about their vacations, but that doesn’t break our spirit and here we come with the next round of monthly donations.
This is the second time that we’re supporting the jQuery Foundation, paying a well-deserved tribute to the library that changed the way that web applications are built and gained the status of a de-facto standard tool used for creating front end applications. We have been using jQuery (and its plugins) in numerous web-related projects for many years, so it’s a natural choice to donate to a Foundation that supports the development of the library.
We are also making a donation to the Warsaw Hospice for Children Foundation, who provides palliative care for incurably sick children and their families at their homes.
Monthly Donations’ Second Anniversary: Redmine and “Przystan Ocalenie”
Yesterday was the second anniversary of our monthly donations to open source projects and charity organizations. We started the initiative on May 15th, 2012, and have continued it uninterruptedly since then.
Over the two years, we have supported many open source projects, mostly related to what we do – software that we use in everyday work or for specific projects. This is our way of expressing gratitude to the software creators for all the effort that they put in.
The world doesn’t revolve around open source software, though, and with that in mind we also made donations to many charity organizations and others in need. In some cases, this lead to even more opportunities for us to be helpful, like with the “little brothers of the Poor” Association, for whom we developed a web application to send seasonal greeting e-cards, promoting their activities.
Today, in celebration of the anniversary, we’re sending donations to two recipients of special significance – one is an open source project that is indispensable for our team, the other one is a charity organization that was the first that we ever donated to, back in May 2012.
That open source software is the web project management system Redmine, which we already supported in 2012, and which got some well deserved praise on our blog in the past. Nothing’s changed in this regard, we continue to be devoted users of Redmine and we can’t imagine working without it.
The aforementioned charity organization is “Przystan Ocalenie”, an animal rescue centre that helps and provides shelter for animals that suffered from human cruelty.
And so we begin the third year of the initiative – see you around for the next round!
Monthly Donations: GIMP and the “Rescue Children with Cancer” Foundation
It’s the middle of April, which means it’s time for another round of our monthly donations to open source projects and charity organizations. This month’s recipients have been selected by Piotr.
The software project that we’re making a donation to is GIMP, the popular multi platform graphics editor. It was first released in 1996, and over the years has come a long way, leading to wide adoption among amateur artists, and even earning some acceptance in the professional market dominated by Adobe Photoshop. In our team, we’re all developers and as such are genetically preconditioned to cringe at the thought of doing any kind of graphics design work, but if we end up being forced to do that, we usually use GIMP.
Oh, and GIMP also happens to be the tool that we use to edit the images in our blog posts (like its own logo above). Thanks to all the people involved in the project, keep up the good work!
The second donation that we’re making this month is to the “Rescue Children with Cancer” Foundation, established in May of 1991, with the mission to support child patients of the Clinic of Paediatric Bone Marrow Transplantation, Oncology and Hematology at the Wroclaw Medical University.
Monthly Donations: The Eclipse Foundation and the Children’s Fantasy Foundation
It’s donations time! For the third time this year, we’re doing the monthly donations to open source projects and other good causes. The honor of selecting the project and organization to support has been given to Karol Janyst.
Being a devoted user of the Eclipse IDE, Karol chose it to be the project that we’re donating to this month. More precisely, the donation goes to the Eclipse Foundation, which supports the development of the Eclipse IDE software. The Foundation also runs a lot of other projects, mostly related to the IDE and extending its features. Thanks and congratulations to the Foundation for all that they have done for the development of open source programming tools, and all the best in the future!
As always, we’re also sending a donation to an organization that carries out charitable work, and this month it’s the Children’s Fantasy Foundation, founded in 2003 and dedicated to bringing a bit of happiness into the lives of terminally ill children by making their wishes and dreams come true. The wishes can be as small as a new toy, or as big as a trip to Disneyland. We are happy to contribute to the Foundation’s efforts and hope our donation will help bring a smile to a child’s face.
